Hey everyone. Late posting this because I've been driving across the country but I've finally arrived in my new unit in Bunbury!
This week I listened to Panorama (Reedition) by Hanry. It's a post rock album and I loved it! It's pretty short, clocking in at around 30 minutes. But it packs a fair bit into those 30 minutes.
From the opening notes of Cavale you get a pretty good idea of what you're in for. It's an epic soundtrack suitable for enjoying nature and landscapes. I had it cranking as I drove across the country and it really fit the mood I was in. It's pensive and really hit me in the feels. There are no words, the music just caught me and helped me drift through the world, watching the scenery change as I drove.
Being a French band, a lot of the song titles don't make sense to me. I guess now is as good of a time as ever to do some google translate.
Cavale means Runaway.
Un temps perdu means A Lost Time.
Brouillard asphalte means Asphalt Fog.
Miroir means Mirror (I could have guessed that one to be honest).
The other 2 tracks, Zenith (tape #1) and 12 Horizons are in English so I understand them. Of them, 12 Horizons is the first song that has a really synthy sound to it. When I first heard it, I was not that enthused to be honest. I have a love hate relationship with the synthesizer. I don't mind them, but I don't love them, and sometimes it feels like they take away from this style of music. Not so with this song. I felt like the synth intro really helped to set the mood.
Then there's Miroir. This song is really electronic, something that I never expected to hear on a post rock album. But it fits really well and I found myself looking forward to it as time passed. It's got an almost poppy feel to it. But I quite like it. Listening back to it now reminds me of overtaking road trains on the Nullarbor highway, which I have no doubt was not the initial intention of the song, but that's music, at a certain point it becomes something different for the listener.
Zenith has a really melancholy sound to it, at least to my ears. It's beautiful but there's a feel of loss to it. It fit my mood as I was listening to this album after saying goodbye to my friends and family, unsure when I would see them again.
All in all, I really loved this album, and would give it 5/5. I'm planning on listening to some more of their music in future as it really hit the spot for me.
But not this week, as I'm already partway through my next album.
The year so far:
